NORTH STAFFS BRANCH OF THE CLASSICAL ASSOCIATION

Annual Report for 2024/25

We continued to hold our lectures in a hybrid form this year, although the trend of the option to watch on Facebook Live Stream (&/or later on You Tube) with lower attendances in person, seems to have become disturbingly more pronounced. We probably need to consider how to address this in future, as a live audience is desirable for speakers. Live Stream participants and our You Tube channel have however again allowed a wider access to our events than used to be normal, and to discontinue either or both options would seem a retrograde step.

As the Treasurer reports elsewhere, our financial position, despite a small loss, in a year when we "invested" in accommodation for a speaker from further afield, through the Horton Fund, and received more support from associated Societies and also the National CA itself, remained much the same as last year. If we had not suffered a drop in our membership numbers of 8 or 9, through death or disengagement, with now about 41 paid up Branch and National members, we should at least have broken even. We were as usual fortunate in continuing to attract engaging and interesting speakers.

In the Autumn we opened in late October with a Lecture at Stoke 6th Form College by Julene Abad del Vecchio (Manchester) on Homer's Underworld (attendance 36, 32 of them students, sadly without a Live Stream because of WiFi difficulties, although a recording was possible, and with 53 views so far on You Tube). In November we had a play reading of Sophocles' The Searching Satyrs (attendance 5). Later in the month Christian Laes (Manchester) gave a Lecture on Disability & Healing in Greek & Roman Mythology (attendance 17, with 10 on Stream, You Tube so far 98 views).

We resumed in March with paired meetings, a reading of Plautus' Amphitruo (attendance 5 including 1 on Zoom), followed 2 weeks later by a talk by Regine May (Leeds) on Should we feel sorry for Alcumena? (attendance only 7 and 4 on Live Stream, You Tube views to date 50). This was the Roman Society Joint Meeting. In late May we had our final lecture, Tom Clements (Manchester & Harvard Center for Hellenic Studies) speaking on Spartan Militarism?: Power, Slavery & Agriculture (attendance 8 in person but 20 online, and 64 You Tube views to date). This was the Hellenic Society Joint Meeting.

We are grateful to the College and Keele SCR for the free use of the rooms for these meetings.

We did attempt to hold a day trip again this year, having not done so in 2024 because of falling numbers, but made it clear this was possible only if enough people committed in advance to attending. As this was not the case, there was again no Branch trip.

Peter Hulse, as co-ordinator, reports that "The Reading Groups are going along fine, using the CA National Zoom subscription. The Greek one is still tracking Xenophon and the Latin one, which has added a new member, is reading Livy Book 21-Hannibal etc." We are grateful to Peter for his work on this aspect of our activities.

Latin and Greek Reading Groups 2024/25

Greek - The Greek Reading Group meets on Zoom, now normally on the third Monday of each month at 2.00 p.m. Some prior knowledge of Greek is required, but the Group is informal and relaxed, not a high-powered academic group, but simply friends getting together to enjoy reading Greek.

Latin The Latin Reading Group also meets on Zoom normally monthly, on the second Tuesday of the month at 2.00 p.m. Members may also like to listen to the news in Latin (pronounced like Italian) on Vatican Radio - Google Hebdomada Papae.

For further details of both groups, or for anyone new wishing to join the groups, please contact the new organiser, Peter Hulse, who has succeeded Nigel Coulton, or email the Branch address below.

These groups are not for beginners: some prior knowledge of the relevant language is necessary to take part in either. For both, please ask the organiser if there is room in the group for more members before joining.

All welcome - all events except any trips are free of charge
